The F-1 student visa is the most common for those wishing to study in the United States. Here, we explain the application process step by step.
Obtain Acceptance
First, you must be accepted into an educational institution that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) in the United States. Then, you will receive an I-20 form, “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status.”
Pay the SEVIS Fee
The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) requires the payment of a fee before your interview to keep your information updated in the system.
Complete the DS-160 Form
The DS-160 form is the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application. Once you have completed the form, you will receive a confirmation barcode that you will need for your interview.
Schedule and Attend the Interview at the Embassy or Consulate
Once the DS-160 form is completed, you must schedule your interview at the U.S. embassy or consulate in your country. Bring the following documents with you:
- Valid passport
- DS-160 confirmation form
- I-20 form
- SEVIS fee payment receipt
- Recent photograph
- Financial documents proving your ability to cover necessary expenses
- Acceptance letter from the educational institution
Prepare for the Interview
During this interview, the consular officer may ask you about your study plans, academic background, and ties to your home country. It is important to demonstrate that you intend to return to your country after completing your studies.
Wait for the Decision
Following your interview, the consular officer will inform you if your visa has been approved or if you need to provide additional documentation. If your visa is approved, it will then be returned to you along with your passport and the F-1 visa stamped in it.
